    Animal adaptations: how living things survive where they live

    Adaptations are the features and behaviours that help an animal survive and reproduce in its habitat. In Primary Science, most questions ask you to link one named feature to one clear survival benefit — so the skill being tested is explanation, not memorising species.

    Structural vs behavioural adaptations

    A structural adaptation is a body part: thick fur, webbed feet, a long beak, sharp claws, a streamlined body. A behavioural adaptation is something the animal does: migrating before winter, hunting at night, huddling together, playing dead when threatened.

    Exam answers usually go wrong when a pupil names the feature but stops there. Always finish the sentence with the benefit.

    • Structural: webbed feet — larger surface pushes more water, so the duck swims faster.
    • Structural: thick blubber — traps heat, so the seal stays warm in cold water.
    • Behavioural: nocturnal hunting — cooler and darker, so the fennec fox avoids the daytime heat and is harder to spot.
    • Behavioural: migration — moves to a place with more food when the season changes.

    The answer pattern examiners look for

    Use a three-part sentence: name the feature, say what it does, then say how that helps the animal survive.

    "The camel has thick eyelashes (feature). They keep sand out of its eyes (function). This allows the camel to see and keep moving during a sandstorm (survival benefit)."

    If your child writes only the feature, they lose the explanation marks even when the answer is 'correct'.

    Worked examples by habitat

    Grouping animals by habitat makes the reasoning transferable, which is what harder questions test — they often use an unfamiliar animal on purpose.

    • Desert (hot, little water): the fennec fox's large ears release heat; the cactus-dwelling animals are active at night to reduce water loss.
    • Polar (very cold): the polar bear's thick fur and fat layer reduce heat loss; small ears reduce the surface area losing heat.
    • Aquatic: the fish's streamlined body reduces resistance in water; gills take in dissolved oxygen.
    • Forest: the sloth's slow movement and green-tinged fur make it hard for predators to notice.

    Common mistakes to correct at home

    Watch for these three habits — they cost more marks than gaps in knowledge.

    • Saying an animal 'wants' or 'decides to' adapt. Adaptations are inherited, not chosen.
    • Confusing adaptation with a response to a stimulus (a plant turning to light in one lesson is a response, not an adaptation).
    • Naming a feature without linking it to survival, food, water, temperature or predators.

    A 15-minute revision routine

    Short, repeated practice beats one long session, because the skill is producing the explanation sentence under time pressure.

    • 5 minutes: pick four animals and say the feature → function → benefit sentence out loud.
    • 5 minutes: write two answers, then underline the benefit clause in each.
    • 5 minutes: try one unfamiliar animal from a picture and reason from its habitat.
