Personification examples for students (with simple definitions)

A bilingual K-12 guide to personification — what it is, why writers use it, and 30 classroom-ready examples for primary and secondary students.

    What is personification?

Personification is a figure of speech where a writer gives human qualities — actions, feelings, or thoughts — to something that is not human, such as an animal, an object, or an idea.

    Why do writers use it?

It makes writing vivid and emotional, helps readers picture a scene, and turns ordinary objects into characters the reader cares about.

How is it different from a metaphor?

A metaphor says one thing IS another ("Time is a thief"). Personification specifically gives a non-human thing human behaviour ("Time crept slowly past me").

    Frequently asked questions

Is personification only used in poetry?

No. You will find personification in songs, novels, advertisements, news headlines and even everyday speech ("My car refuses to start").

    Can animals be personified?

Yes — when we give animals human-like thoughts or speech ("The cat plotted her revenge"), that is personification.

What is the difference between personification and anthropomorphism?

Personification is a single descriptive moment in writing. Anthropomorphism is when a non-human character (like Peppa Pig) lives a fully human life throughout the whole story.
